We’re absolutely convinced that looking at the photos on the Well Fed Farm feed will convert anyone to homesteading. Aaren, the mama behind the account, lives with her two teenage sons on a farm in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia where she raises and grows a wide variety of animals and produce and makes it all look oh so delicious. The following is an excerpt of a previous Instagram takeover.
Hello, Homestead Mamas! I am Aaren of @wellfedfarm and I have been asked by the wonderful Amy to takeover here for the next few days sharing posts and a bit about the evolution of our homestead life. We live in Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia in a tiny town called Floyd. I have two sons we’ve been raising here on this spot of land for over 12 years now. The oldest just turned 17 and our youngest turns 14 in just a few weeks. (I can hardly believe my children are this old.)
I wear a lot of hats: mother, wife, milkmaid, cook, forager, mucker, gardener, builder… the list goes on! I am sure most of you can completely relate! Industriousness and the ability to learn and learn (coupled with the fact I don’t let failure and mistakes beat me down for long) is the name of the game.
Let’s talk nutrient dense food and all that love, care, sunshine, and hard work that goes into this. It’s what gets us raising our families in the lifestyle we have or want to, no? My first babe was a water home birth on top of a northern NM mesa where we called home at the time. My second babe was an unplanned emergency surgery at 25 weeks. Which then became three LONG frightening months of touch and go at the NICU in Asheville, NC. The boys’ father and I wanted access to the most nutrient dense foods possible for our family now more than ever. Enzo, our second was at the time tiny but thriving and after a year plus of breastfeeding and pumping the stress of it all lead us to Sally Fallon’s formulas. The milk one was ok, but Enzo (with his father’s Argentine blood) really thrived on the meat based one and all those healthy fats! We jumped right in… to everything!
Stewarding rare and endangered heritage breeds seemed like a no-brainer and was our focus from day 1. Organic methods, regenerative practices, and a goal of a closed loop system helped our define and refine our animal husbandry and veg garden. We leaned in to our beautiful woods and lush pasture forage. At first it was to harvest, cook, and feeding just the family but it spilled over and got bigger.
